Swede in Cuba car crash concerned about driver

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? A young Swedish politician who survived a car crash in Cuba in which dissident Oswaldo Paya and another government opponent were killed says he is deeply concerned about a Spanish colleague who was charged with vehicular manslaughter for the accident.

Aron Modig returned home on July 31 after days of intense questioning by Cuban police. He says he doesn't remember what led to the July 22 crash, but is deeply worried about Angel Carromero, who was driving the car.

Modig said in an interview published Friday in the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter that "nobody knows what's happening to him there."

Paya's family says it doubts the explanation by Cuban authorities for the crash and has asked for an independent investigation.

The 27-year-old Modig is head of the youth party of the conservative Christian Democrats.
