While you could probably spend 4 years at Wesleyan and only ever head into town for a bite to eat or to pick something at Rite Aid, I think that it?s important that students become a part of the Middletown community. For me, one way of accomplishing that has been spending a little time each week volunteering in town. One great resource Wes provides is the?Office of Community Service and Volunteerism. The Office of Community Service and Volunteerism (OCS) fosters community building within the University and with the communities of Middletown and Middlesex County. OCS maintains the spirit of public service at Wesleyan by offering opportunities to participate in volunteer work, providing work-study placements in the community, and supporting student-sponsored social action initiatives. The office, which is located at 167 High Street, can work with you to find a placement that?s right, in terms of activity, time, location, etc. Additionally, at the beginning of every school year, OCS hosts a community service fair outside Usdan ? look out for that in mid-September. For a preview,?Here?s a list of local community service agencies that OCS has affiliations with.

One program that started last year is the?Wesleyan Language Bank. The Wesleyan Language Bank, run by OCS, provides translation/interpreting services for the larger Middletown area. The goals of the language bank are to remove language barriers to effective communication, increase cross cultural understanding, and build mutually inspiring relationships between communities. If you have skills in a foreign language, the Language Bank would love your help!
