Dollar General profit rises (Reuters)

CHICAGO (Reuters) ? Dollar General Corp (DG.N) posted a bigger-than-expected rise in quarterly profit and raised the low end of its full-year forecast on Tuesday, as it worked to balance demand for low-priced goods with manufacturers' push to raise prices.

The retailer earned $146 million, or 42 cents per share, in the fiscal second quarter that ended on July 29, up from $141 million, or 41 cents per share, a year earlier.

Earnings of 52 cents per share, excluding items, exceeded analysts' average forecast of 48 cents, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Dollar General's customers are buying an increasing proportion of lower-margin necessities as they cut back on discretionary purchases due to higher gas prices, continued high levels of unemployment and other economic concerns.

Sales of items such as candy, snacks and other food continued to increase at a higher rate than merchandise such as home, apparel and seasonal goods during the quarter.

For Dollar General, which prices most of its merchandise below $10, the weak economy is a double-edged sword. As lower-income shoppers seek low-priced food and other basic goods, a soft economy brings new customers into its stores and those of competitors such as Family Dollar Stores Inc (FDO.N).

Dollar General, which has more than 9,640 stores, more than any other chain in the United States, said sales rose 11.2 percent to $3.58 billion. Sales at stores open at least a year, or same-store sales, increased 5.9 percent.

Chains such as Dollar General need to keep prices low to retain customers, which is difficult when costs are rising and shoppers notice even minor price increases.

Shoppers buying more food and basic goods rather than discretionary items also pressures profitability, as those items generally carry a lower gross profit rate than other goods. At the same time, the prices Dollar General paid for goods rose due to higher commodity and fuel costs.

Gross profit dipped to 32.1 percent of sales from 32.2 percent of sales a year earlier. Over the first six months of the year, gross profit fell to 31.8 percent from 32.2 percent.

Dollar General now expects to earn $2.22 to $2.30 per share for its 53-week fiscal year, versus a prior forecast of $2.20 to $2.30 per share.

It expects sales to rise 12 percent to 14 percent, up from a prior forecast of 11 percent to 13 percent. Same-store sales are now expected to increase by 4 percent to 6 percent, versus an earlier forecast of 3 percent to 5 percent.

Dollar General is majority-owned by private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co LP (KKR.UL), which brought the Goodlettsville, Tennessee-based company back to the public market in November 2009.

Steps To Take In Finding A Keynote Speaker : Writing and Speaking

You are here: Home / General / Steps To Take In Finding A Keynote Speaker

Whenever you go to a seminar or some other type of public event, you?ll typically notice that the keynote speaker will make a difference to the success of the event. They are the glue that holds the entire event together. These are generally men and women who are charismatic and well informed on the subject that they are presenting and this enables them to keep the audience engaged.

In the event the public speaker can?t hold the audience?s interest then the whole presentation will have no meaning whatsoever. It is for that reason important for you to be careful when finding a keynote speaker for the coming event, otherwise the entire function could possibly be a failure.

The very first thing you need to do is sit down with your organizing committee and figure out exactly what the unique selling point of your presentation is. Look at all the factors that you will want the presenter to achieve and then examine exactly what you can spare financially once you seek to hire your chosen speaker.

Armed with these criteria, it is possible to then attempt finding a keynote speaker for your occasion. It might in addition be a great idea to find out from other businesses about available speakers they might advise. They may be able to refer you to one who served them very well. You could in addition search for a person on the web, where you?ll have the ability to go through evaluations from those who have employed each speaker before you end up making your final choice.

It is best to be mindful of the motive of the public speaker. Some professional speakers will attempt to advertise themselves even while they are giving their keynote speech. This tends to just confuse the audience and ruin the whole event. You may additionally find that some of them, though charismatic, may not have enough understanding of the focus of the event. Arrange interviews with them to make sure that you can have a personal idea of just how effective the speaker is going to be. You?ll have the ability to discover if they are knowledgeable of the subject at hand. When you?ve made the decision on the speaker then you should provide him with all of the information that he needs to get ready for the keynote speech.

You should additionally inform the speaker about the make up of the projected audience. A keynote speech for a group of teens is going to be completely different from a speech to company executives. Informing the speaker about this will enable him to prepare properly for your audience and that should boost his effectiveness and help make the whole event substantially more successful. Finding a keynote speaker requires time and effort to locate the ideal one, but it will be really worth it in the end.

Are you looking for a keynote speaker? Be sure to visit Klemmer and Associates for a nationally acclaimed keynote speaker.

NJ man pleads guilty in 1978 murder of 5 teens (AP)

NEWARK, N.J. ? A New Jersey man pleaded guilty Tuesday to murdering five teenagers in 1978 in what was one of the state's longest-running cold cases.

Philander Hampton, of Jersey City, told police three years ago that he and a cousin, Lee Evans of nearby Irvington, lured the teens to an abandoned house in Newark with the promise of odd jobs, then locked them inside and set the house on fire.

The attack allegedly was prompted by stolen drugs.

Melvin Pittman, Ernest Taylor, Alvin Turner, Randy Johnson and Michael McDowell were last seen on a busy street near a park where they had played basketball on Aug. 20, 1978.

Evans is scheduled to go to trial this fall.

Though family members long suspected Evans, a local handyman who frequently hired local youths, the case stumped investigators for years.

The friends were last seen on a busy Newark street. Later that night, McDowell went home and changed clothes, then returned to a waiting pickup truck with at least one other boy inside. That was the last confirmed sighting of any of the teens.

According to prosecutors, Hampton took detectives to the former spot of the abandoned house in 2008. The blaze destroyed nearly all evidence and hampered the investigation from the outset because the fire occurred before the five boys were reported missing and no connection was made between the two, authorities said at the time of Evans' and Hampton's arrest last year.

Since his arrest, Hampton had been and out of court as he tried to have his 2008 statements to police barred on legal grounds. But state Superior Court Judge Patricia Costello ruled the statement admissible this spring. Hampton pleaded guilty to five counts of felony murder before Costello on Tuesday.

Evans has been free on bail since last summer. He dismissed one attorney last fall and has sought to represent himself at his trial. Costello earlier this year found him mentally competent to stand trial after prosecutors asked for a psychiatric examination.

Sony may stumble in bid to become tablet No.2 (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Sony Corp's new tablet computers, expected to be launched on Wednesday, face an uphill battle against dominant players Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics, with the gadget's expected pricing in particular raising red flags.

The Japanese electronics conglomerate behind PlayStation games consoles and Vaio PCs is struggling under the weight of its lossmaking television division and badly needs the boost of a new hit product.

"Sony really must be in the tablet market and must succeed," said Mito Securities electronics analyst Keita Wakabayashi.

Sony has said it is targeting Samsung's No.2 slot in the booming market, where the Korean company's Galaxy Tab range is a distant second to Apple's blockbuster iPad.

At an industry event in Germany on Wednesday, Sony is expected to launch its tablets, which were first shown off at a Tokyo event in April.

One, codenamed S1, has a single 9.4-inch screen, while the other is a clamshell type with two 5.5-inch displays. Both run on an adapted version of Google's Android Honeycomb.

The company hopes features such as access to first generation PlayStation games and the single-screen version's unique curved design will help it stand out in the crowd of more than 100 iPad challengers based on Android.

But analysts say the price, to be announced later in the day, may be the determining factor.

"We worry that the S1 tablet could be priced too high (eg near $600), and thus sell poorly, and we think the S2 clamshell design will fail," Jeff Loff, an electronics analyst at Macquarie Securities, said in a report.

Hewlett Packard's decision to drop its Touchpad tablet weeks after launch demonstrates how easy it is to fail in a market pioneered and dominated by the makers of the iPad.

Analysts estimate Apple had sold about 30 million iPads by mid-August, while distant runner-up Samsung is expected to sell about 7.5 million units of its Galaxy Tab this year, though sales are banned in Germany and delayed in Australia after Apple sued it over "slavish" imitation.

Both the iPad and Galaxy Tab sell for $500 and upwards, but HP's experience underlines the importance of keeping gadgets affordable amid weak consumer sentiment in Europe and North America.

Sales soared after HP slashed the price of its Touchpad to $99 from $399 and $499, prompting the company to announce a further "final run" of the tablets to meet demand.

Even if the Sony tablet does take off, investors say it will do little to revive the company's share price, which has lost about 17 percent since Sony reported quarterly earnings on July 28. The broader market has fallen about 10 percent in the same period.

"It won't be much of a boost in profit terms even if this product succeeds," said Shigeo Sugawara, senior investment manager at Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Asset Management in Tokyo.

"It is still a small category compared with the total PC market. It will certainly not be a catalyst for the share price...it's more of a branding exercise."

"The biggest factor in moving Sony's share price will be televisions," Sugawara added. "How far they can restructure that division is the biggest issue facing Sony and other electronics makers such as Panasonic and Sharp."

Helicopters rush food, water to cut-off Vt. towns (AP)

NEWFANE, Vt. ? National Guard helicopters rushed food and water Tuesday to a dozen cut-off Vermont towns after the rainy remnants of Hurricane Irene washed out roads and bridges in a deluge that took many people in the landlocked New England state by surprise.

"As soon as we can get help, we need help," Liam McKinley said by cellphone from a mountain above flood-stricken Rochester, Vt.

Up to 11 inches of rain from the weekend storm turned placid streams into churning, brown torrents that knocked homes off their foundations, flattened trees and took giant bites out of the asphalt across the countryside. At least three people died in Vermont.

"I think that people are still a little shell-shocked right now. There's just a lot of disbelief on people's faces. It came through so quickly, and there's so much damage," Gail Devine, director of the Woodstock Recreation Center, said as volunteers moved furniture out of the flooded basement and shoveled out thick mud that filled the center's two swimming pools.

As crews raced to repair the roads, the National Guard began flying in supplies to the towns of Cavendish, Granville, Hancock, Killington-Mendon, Marlboro, Pittsfield, Plymouth, Rochester, Stockbridge, Strafford, Stratton and Wardsboro. The Guard also used heavy-duty vehicles to bring relief to flood-stricken communities still reachable by road.

The cut-off towns ranged in population from under 200 (Stratton) to nearly 1,400 (Cavendish).

"If it's a life-and-death situation, where someone needs to be Medevac-ed or taken to a hospital, we would get a helicopter there to airlift them out, if we could get close to them. A lot of these areas are mountainous areas where there may not be a place to land," said Mark Bosma, a spokesman for Vermont Emergency Management.

There were no immediate reports of anyone in dire condition being rescued by helicopter.

But it took a relay operation involving two ambulances and an all-terrain vehicle to take a Killington woman in respiratory distress to a hospital in Rutland, about 13 miles away, after floodwaters severed the road between the two communities, Rutland Regional Medical Center President Tom Hubner said. The patient, whose name was not released, was doing fine, he said.

In Rochester, where telephones were out and damage was severe, people could be seen from helicopters standing in line outside a grocery store. McKinley said the town's restaurants and a supermarket were giving food away rather than let it spoil, and townspeople were helping each other.

"We've been fine so far. The worst part is not being able to communicate with the rest of the state and know when people are coming in," he said.

He said government agencies did a good job of warning people about the storm. "But here in Vermont, I think we just didn't expect it and didn't prepare for it," he said. "I thought, how could it happen here?"

Wendy Pratt, another of the few townspeople able to communicate with the outside world, posted an update on Facebook using a generator and a satellite Internet connection. She sketched a picture of both devastation and New England neighborliness.

"People have lost their homes, their belongings, businesses ... the cemetery was flooded and caskets were lost down the river. So many areas of complete devastation," Pratt wrote. "In town there is no cell service or internet service - all phones in town are out. We had a big town meeting at the church at 4 this afternoon to get any updates."

"Mac's opened up at 5 and gave perishables away to anyone who came," she added. "The Huntington House put on a big, free community dinner tonight."

Access to Rochester and Stratton by road was restored later in the day, officials said.

All together, the storm has been blamed for at least 42 deaths in 12 states. More than 2.5 million people from North Carolina to Maine were still without electricity Tuesday, three days after the hurricane churned up the Eastern Seaboard.

While all eyes were on the coast as Irene swirled northward, some of the worst destruction took place well inland, away from the storm's most punishing winds. In Vermont, Gov. Peter Shumlin called it the worst flooding in a century. Small towns in upstate New York ? especially in the Catskills and the Adirondacks ? were also besieged by floodwaters.

In Pittsfield, Vt., newlyweds Marc Leibowitz and Janina Stegmeyer of New York City were stranded Sunday along with members of the wedding party and dozens of their guests after floodwaters swamped the couple's honeymoon cottage. The honeymooners narrowly escaped in a four-wheel-drive rental car just before a bridge behind them collapsed.

More than a dozen of the 60 or so guests were airlifted out by private helicopters on Tuesday.

Michael Ricci of Woodstock, Vt., spent the day clearing debris from his backyard along the Ottauquechee River. What had been a meticulously mowed, sloping grass lawn and gorgeous flower beds was now a muddy expanse littered with debris, including wooden boards, propane tanks and a deer hunting target.

"The things we saw go down the river were just incredible," he said. "Sheds, picnic tables, propane tanks, furnaces, refrigerators. We weren't prepared for that. We had prepared for wind and what we ended up with was more water than I could possibly, possibly have imagined." He said the water in the yard was almost up to the house, or about 15 to 20 feet above normal.

He added: "The force of it was beyond our comprehension."

Vermont emergency officials and the National Weather Service warned before the storm about the potential for heavy rain and flooding. On Thursday, Shumlin recommended stocking up on enough food, water and other supplies to last three days.

On Tuesday, the governor defended his state's decision not to undertake extensive evacuations before the storm arrived, noting that it was too hard to predict which communities in a rugged place like Vermont would get hit.

"You'd have to evacuate the entire state," he said.

Gerald and Evangeline Monroe of Quechee, Vt., agreed with the governor and said they had no complaints about the way authorities handled the crisis.

Gerald Monroe noted that some homes on one side of the river through his town were damaged, while those on the opposite banks 100 yards away were unscathed.

His wife said city-dwellers may see a weather report and know it applies to their entire metropolitan area. "But when you live in Vermont, there are lots of little microclimates and every village is different." she said. "I think our authorities were fine."

Approximately 260 roads in Vermont were closed because of storm damage, along with about 30 highway bridges. Vermont Deputy Transportation Secretary Sue Minter said the infrastructure damage was in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Relief supplies arrived at Vermont's National Guard headquarters early Tuesday in a convoy of 30 trucks from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Accompanied by Shumlin, FEMA administrator Craig Fugate toured the state by helicopter Tuesday to survey the damage.

Meanwhile, in North Carolina, where Irene blew ashore along the Outer Banks on Saturday before heading for New York and New England, Gov. Beverly Perdue said the hurricane destroyed more than 1,100 homes and caused at least $70 million in damage.

Airlines said it would be days before the thousands of passengers stranded by Irene find their way home. Amtrak service was still out Tuesday between Philadelphia and New York because of flooding in Trenton. Commuter train service between New Jersey and New York City resumed Tuesday, except for one line that was still dealing with flooding.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said at news conference in North Carolina that she was unaware of anything federal authorities should have done differently in Vermont. She said FEMA and its state counterpart worked closely together, and she noted that after the state agency operations center got flooded out, it moved into FEMA's quarters.

William "Breck" Bowden, an expert on Vermont's watershed at the University of Vermont, attributed the disaster to a combination of factors: The soil was wet, Vermont's steep hills quickly fed the rainfall into streams, and the storm dumped a huge amount of water.

"There was plenty of warning being given about the coming storm by the meteorological community and the news media," he said. "The real issues are the enormous damage to our infrastructure. That's nothing an evacuation could have done anything about."

First AT&T LTE Phone, HTC Holiday, on Its Way (ContributorNetwork)

Heads up, current and future AT&T subscribers: Darren Murph of Engadget has just posted pictures of what could be your next smartphone. Currently called the HTC Holiday, it may be sold as the Waikiki at launch. And the big thing that sets it apart? It'll be compatible with AT&T's 4G LTE network, currently under construction.

What is LTE?

LTE, or Long-Term Evolution, is one of three competing technologies for next-generation wireless networks (the others are WiMAX and HSPA+). All three are broadly referred to as 4G, and allow faster connection speeds than the previous 3G standards.

Verizon has been running an LTE network for awhile now, while Sprint's chosen WiMAX. AT&T's working towards building an actual LTE network, but it isn't quite there yet, so its 4G smartphones like the Motorola Atrix have been using an interim HSPA+ network.

If that all is some kind of acronym soup for you, look at it this way: AT&T's current "4G" network is more like "3.5G." The actual 4G network is on its way, and will be here soon. The HTC Holiday (or Waikiki, or whatever it will be called) will be able to use the real 4G network when it launches, in the cities in which it's available. Or if it launches before 4G LTE is available, it'll use the "3.5G" HSPA+ in the meantime, just like the Momentum and Elevate do.

So is the HTC Holiday any good?

That depends. The iPhone 4 is available on AT&T's network, and it sets a pretty high standard, especially for a smartphone that launched last year. And the iPhone 5 will be coming out pretty soon, raising the bar even higher and bringing the iPhone's performance up to par with its usability.

As far as Android smartphones go, however, the HTC Holiday looks pretty solid. Its specs are all through the roof, with a whole 1 GB of RAM and a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor. It's packing an 8 megapixel camera with a flash, plus a front-facing camera for video calls, and its screen size? 4.5 inches across. That's almost putting it in tablet territory, to the point where it may be uncomfortable for people with smaller hands to use.

The Upshot

The HTC Holiday's not just another Android superphone. Besides the 4G LTE connectivity, it'll also be packing the latest version of HTC Sense, HTC's integrated (and classy) design that makes it easy to perform common tasks and see what your friends are up to online.

Judging by the prices for AT&T's two already-announced 4G laptop dongles, though, you'll be paying a premium for those 4G speeds. And with a handset the size of a small tablet, you may have trouble fitting it in your pocket ... or your hands.

Jared Spurbeck is an open-source software enthusiast, who uses an Android phone and an Ubuntu laptop PC. He has been writing about technology and electronics since 2008.

Flood Insurance ? Alexandria

Don Taylor gives us the scoop on flood insurance.

Flood insurance is provided in the United States by the federal government via the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), in two ways. First, the government directly provides coverage for some properties. Second, the government works in concert with around 90 private insurers who function as servicing contractors. In the second case, the profits from such flood insurance are private, but the losses are socialized as private insurance companies bear none of the underwriting risk associated with this insurance.

Some details about the NFIP include?..

can compel the purchase flood insurance if the property resides in Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) (since 1974)

around 80% of covered properties are assessed full-risk premiums based on Army Corps of Engineers models; the other 20% have subsidized premiums because the covered dwelling was built prior to the identification of SFHAs in 1974

because of subsidized premiums, in some years the NFIP will run a loss, in others a ?profit?

there are a variety of reasons that full risk premium policies may not in fact represent the expected value of future damages (the goal for such premiums)

has a statutory limit on the aggregate amount of money that can be borrowed to pay out damage claims; this limit was $1.5 billion from 1996-2005; after Hurricanes Dennis, Katrina, Rita and Wilma the cap is now $20.725 billion; once the cap is exceeded, no claims may be paid

Hurricane Katrina alone cost the NFIB $17.75 billion

Individual policies are limited to $250,000 for dwelling/$100,000 for contents for a home; $500,000/$500,000 for a business

Annual premium increases are capped at 10% annually
risk of loss is highly concentrated; 1% of the insured properties resulted in 38% of the losses incurred by the NFIP from 1978-2004

60% of the single family dwellings covered by the NFIP are in the South; 38% in Florida alone.

I can see some need for this kind of insurance for critical businesses in flood prone areas, especially along the coasts. We need functioning ports. Defense facilities and the communities that support them sometimes need to be built along the coast and are subject to flooding. What I cannot see us subsidizing are vacation homes or homes that are electively built in flood prone/hurricane prone areas. I am happy to see that they put some limits on this insurance, but when the law sunsets again, it needs to be revised. We need strict limits on what is covered, and private companies need to be at risk for loss, not have guaranteed freedom from loss.

  • It is important to determine the number of people you want to insure, before you buy health insurance. Every insurance company in India offers a personal insurance plan, health insurance for parents in India as well as a family floater plan, which gives the same coverage to the entire family. The advantage of a family floater plan is that you do not need a buy a separate health insurance for parents in India or a separate policy for children health insurance and so on.
  • It is important for you to you to determine your budget before you buy health insurance online While health insurance does help you a lot with medical and hospital expenses, it should not be at the cost of your peace of mind. It is important to know how much you need to pay for the plan as well as premiums. Comparing quotes from every company in India and researching online helps you find the cheapest plan for your needs
  • The features offered by the plan should be a consideration before you buy health insurance. Does it offer cashless facility for hospital expenses? Does it cover pre-operation and post operation hospital expenses? Does the insurance company India have a wide enough network of hospitals to be of help to you? Does it provide a health policy covering pre existing conditions? etc
  • Before you buy a plan from an insurance company in India, you need to consider its financial stability and reliability. A reputed company with a history of timely claims settlements and a good network of hospitals and healthcare facilities will be a safer option over a new company which might not be reliable.
Looking for an appropriate online health plan india will get you exactly what you are looking for. car insurance health insurance insurance travel and home insurance provide for all that an individual requires for securing himself and his assets. While opting for health insurance for parents in India ensure you buy a health policy covering pre existing conditions

Game Night - Flapjacks and Sasquatches NOW with Side of Bacon ...

Okay, time to explain?

Thanks to Geek Dad I just found out about a cool new card game from independent game makers, Prolific Games.

It?s called Flapjacks and Sasquatches. ?I know, cool right?! ?It?s name alone should be reason enough to pick it up. Never mind that they received?a ?Best New Family Card Game? nomination from?Games Magazine.

The concept is simple ? to chop down the most trees. ?Along the way you encounter cards that will help you (titanium axe, apprentice, flapjacks, etc.) or hurt you (Sasquatch mating season) in your task. That is a very simplistic description, but not that far from how easy the game is to play.

They started the game on a shoestring and have had success?retailing?it through their website and select locations throughout Minnesota, but now it?s time to go BIG! ?Thus their ?Side of Bacon? expansion! ?But to go big and bring the bacon, they needed capital and I am happy to report they got it via Kickstarter*. ?Their goal was $10,000 and they?ve knocked it out.

It?s still not too late to help the cause and get yourself an original card deck (soon to be a collector?s item) or on the list to be the first to get the Side of Bacon. ?So let?s make it happen for these guys and have some fun with a truly unique game while we are at it!

RSS supports Anna's stir, to mobilise people against graft

Agartala, Aug 27

Backing the stir by Anna Hazare against corruption, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Saturday slammed the "uncalled for arrogance" by the government to the activist's demands and demanded an effective Lokpal at the earliest.

"The RSS has, through a resolution passed at its national meet at Puttur in Karnataka in March this year, exhorted its Swayamsevaks to fully support all the initiatives in the country against corruptions in all forms," RSS leader Ram Madhav told reporters here.

"The government and some leaders of UPA (United Progressive Alliance) have demonstrated uncalled for arrogance in addressing the issues raised by Hazare. The RSS condemns this attitude and wants an effective Lokpal at the earliest," he added.

"While the proposed Lokpal addresses one major dimensions of the problem of corruptions, there are several other dimensions to it like the influence of black money and short-cut methods to get the works done," said Madhav, who is now on a tour to the northeastern states.

He said that the RSS has launched a country-wide campaign to educate the people against fraudulent acts and to make India a corruption free country, clean society and political situation.

He also said the RSS will undertake a determined fight against the proposed communal violence bill, and has been asking MPs of all political parties to reject the proposed Communal and Targeted Violence (Prevention) Bill 2011 when it is brought in parliament.

"The National Advisory Council (NAC) headed by the Congress president Sonia Gandhi had drafted the dangerous and draconian bill that is explicitly biased against the majority Hindu communities," he alleged.

"Through the bill it attempts to widen the gulf and acrimony between communities and thus it would be a fodder for anti-national and anti-Hindu forces," he said, adding: "The bill aimed at only to punish the people belonging to Hindu after the any incident of communal violence."

He said the RSS has set up over 5,000 "Ekal Vidyalaya" (single teacher school) in seven northeastern states to provide education among the tribal, backward and children living in far-flung areas.

The RSS also runs several projects for the tribals, uneducated and backward people and people living in the remote and hilly areas of the northeasteen region, he added.

The projects include, running of free hostels, health care and medical centres, "Banabasi Kalyan Ashram" (farmhouse for the forest dwellers) and mini artisan training centres.

Parking Space or Small Business?

Photo from Flickr User JeffK

I read this story on Huffington Post about Charles Mysak and his curbside bookselling business. The video embedded with the article is from a student filmmaker who was fulfilling a documentary assignment for class so you need to keep that in mind when watching it. (Also an advisory for some salty language here and there!)

The first part of the video and Charles story is what I?m most interested in. (The story of his law career and what brought him to this point in his life is interesting, but not for this particular subject.)

Here are a few facts about the business side of his story.

Charles pays the parking meter $36 dollars in quarters each morning to keep his car parked on a busy New York City street. He admits in the video that after a drive from his home in New Jersey, it takes him around 4 hours to set up. If he arrives around 6:15, (which is what he says in the video) that means he isn?t open for business until 10:30 am or so. We can assume that he stays open until at least 6:00 pm or possibly later. Then another 4 hours to repack the books and magazines back into his car and drive back home.

He has to battle the birds in the trees over his stand, the dogs in the street who do their business sometimes to the destruction of books he needs to sell to stay in business. He has to survive not only the cold of winter but the rain of spring and the heat of summer.? He has to battle parking tickets, disgruntled flower planters and any number of other various obstacles.

And he?s been doing this for 11 years now.

11 years.

My first question after reading this was why?? How much profit can he really be seeing with this type of business model?

On the plus side, his costs are probably super low.? Let?s call the $36 dollars ?rent?. That?s $1,080 a month (approximately) without any taxes, insurance or utilities. In downtown NYC. I would assume he gets his books from library sales or wholesalers. His next highest costs would have to be the gas to and from his ?shop?. But unless I?m missing something. That?s it.

So is he a small business? Or, as some of the comments suggest, is he a vagrant who has found a way around paying taxes?

Would you have a different opinion of him if he was standing beside a food cart selling hot dogs?

Extraterrestrial Hurricanes: Other Planets Have Huge Storms, Too (SPACE.com)

By Earth standards, Hurricane Irene is a monster storm. But it's just a baby compared to the massive cyclones of Jupiter and Saturn.?

Our planet is not the only one in the solar system that boasts huge, hurricane-like storms. The gas giants Jupiter and Saturn, for example, churn out spinning squalls that can be bigger than the entire Earth. While these storms aren't fed by warm ocean water the way terrestrial hurricanes are, they're similar in a lot of ways, scientists say.

"There certainly are storms that have thunder and lightning and rain that are bigger than terrestrial hurricanes," said atmospheric scientist Andrew Ingersoll of the California Institute of Technology, a researcher with NASA's Cassini mission to Saturn. "And more violent ? the winds on those planets are stronger, too." [Photos: Most Powerful Storms of the Solar System]

Giant planets, giant storms

Hurricane Irene measured about 600 miles (966 kilometers) across as it bore down on the U.S. East Coast today (Aug. 26).

That's big and scary, but it pales next to storms on our solar system's gas giants. Jupiter's Great Red Spot ? which has been raging continuously for at least 180 years ? could fit two entire Earths within it, Ingersoll said.

And in December, a thunderstorm about 6,200 miles (10,000 km) wide erupted on Saturn. This one, known as the Great White Spot, is still going strong, and some of its clouds have wrapped all the way around the ringed planet. [Top 10 Extreme Planet Facts]

The Great White Spot also generates lots of lightning, just like thunderstorms here on Earth.

"We can see the lightning flashes on the night side, and we can hear the radio static from the lightning," Ingersoll told SPACE.com. "The energy in the lightning flashes is a lot stronger than terrestrial lightning."

Further, last year, astronomers spotted a cyclone at Neptune's south pole that was thousands of miles wide. The Neptune squall was similar to a spinning storm discovered a few years earlier at Saturn's south pole, which even had a well-developed eye, just like an Earth hurricane.

But the Saturn polar vortex was much bigger than any hurricane found on Earth. Its eye alone measured about 2,500 miles (4,000 km) in diameter; the eye of a typical terrestrial hurricane may be just 2 or 3 miles across.

Energy and moisture

Here on Earth, hurricanes gain their power from warm ocean water.

Warm, moist air over tropical or subtropical seas rises, causing a zone of lower air pressure beneath it. Higher-pressure air zips in to fill the void. But that air soon warms, becomes moist and rises, too. As this pattern repeats, a huge, swirling storm is born.

Jupiter and Saturn don't have oceans, so their spinning storms aren't "hurricanes" in the strict, terrestrial sense. But similar processes spawn them, according to Ingersoll. [Photos: Jupiter, Largest Planet in the Solar System]

"Heat makes buoyancy; hot air rises," Ingersoll said. "Heat also causes evaporation of moisture, and when the moisture condenses and forms rain, that releases the energy. So, energy and moisture."

Most of the energy driving Earth's hurricanes ultimately comes from the sun. But that may not be the case on Jupiter and Saturn, which orbit our star from much farther away than Earth does.

"They're so giant that they still have retained some of their heat of formation," Ingersoll said. "So they have their own internal heat that can generate these giant storms."

The moisture requirement explains why gigantic, hurricane-like storms don't seem to occur on Venus or Mars, he added.

"The giant planets have moisture down below the clouds," Ingersoll said. "But Venus doesn't. Venus is dry as a bone, hot and dry. It's not comparable. And Mars is cold and dry."

Saturn storm mysteries

Saturn's Great White Spot tends to erupt every few decades, shattering long periods of calm and quiescence. Scientists still aren't sure why some storms on the giant planets should be so big, and so infrequent.

"For some reason, they store up that energy for a long time, then let it loose in a violent, huge storm," Ingersoll said. "It didn't have to work out that way; they could let off a little popcorn now and then. But they don't do that."

He's hoping that Cassini will help resolve this question ? just one of many that scientists are grappling with as they try to understand the weather systems on other planets.

"We're working right now on this giant Saturn storm, with that exact question in mind," Ingersoll said.

Buffett endorses BofA with risky, $5 billion bet

Warren Buffett?s $5 billion cash infusion is a bet that investor fears about Bank of America?s financial strength have been overblown.

It?s also a wager the banking giant will be able with withstand ongoing mortgage losses. Fresh signs of further deterioration in the housing market, however, could make Buffett?s bet one of his riskiest.

Buffett's investment is a huge shot in the arm for the Charlotte, N.C.-based banking giant, which has seen its stock come under pressure amid questions about its balance sheet.

Buffett told CNBC he called BofA chief executive Brian Moynihan this week and offered to make the investment. Buffett?s billions helped calm recent investor fears that the bank may need to raise more capital ? perhaps tens or hundreds of billions of dollars ? to offset its mortgage losses.

Along with his check, the Oracle of Omaha delivered a ringing endorsement.

"Bank of America is a strong, well-led company, and I called Brian to tell him I wanted to invest in it," Buffett said in a statement posted on BofA's website.

The message was aimed at investors who have grown frustrated with the bank?s handling of its mortgage mess.

"Perhaps even more than the capital, the imprimatur of Buffett will build confidence in BofA,? said independent banking analyst Nancy Bush. "This investment will encourage other similar investors, who may have been staying away, to take a closer look."

Buffett won much more generous terms than a common shareholder: 50,000 shares of preferred stock that will pay a 6 percent annual dividend. He also got warrants to buy 700 million Bank of America shares at $7.14 a share. News of the deal sent the bank?s stock well above that price, rising 10 percent to $7.69 in afternoon trading, earning Buffett an instant paper profit of more than $350 million.

Bank of America?s common stock investors haven?t done as well. Over the past few weeks, ominous reports of a new slowdown in the economy triggered a wave of selling that erased more than a third of Bank of America?s market value.

Story: Buffett investing $5 billion in Bank of America

Though Bank of America still faces big losses on its portfolio of troubled mortgages, buffett is betting the recent selling in the bank?s shares simply went too far. Shares are trading well below the company?s so-called ?book value,? a widely watched benchmark that roughly tracks a company?s total assets minus its liabilities.

Bank of America has plenty of capital. It reported some $2.26 trillion in assets on its books as of the end of June. But investors have grown increasingly concerned because those assets include one of the industry?s largest and most troubled portfolio of home mortgages, which was part of its purchase of Countrywide Financial in January 2008.

For now, the additional $5 billion should help allay fears that Bank of America can?t raise more capital if it needs to.

"This proves to the market that if the bank needs additional capital ? which we don't believe they do ? but if they needed to calm the market by raising capital, they could do it within 30 minutes with a quick call to Uncle Warren,? said Sean Egan, managing director at Egan-Jones Ratings.

Buffett?s bet on the bank is also a bet that future mortgage losses are manageable. Those losses will depend heavily on how many more homeowners default on their loans and how much Bank of America can recover from the sale of their homes after it forecloses on the properties.

The outlook on that front darkened this week as the Mortgage Bankers Association reported that delinquency rates on mortgages rose in the second quarter after falling for a year.

"Mortgage delinquencies are no longer improving and are now showing some signs of worsening," said Jay Brinkmann, chief economist of the MBA, a trade group.

The rise in delinquencies stems in part from the persistently weak job market. With unemployment stuck at 9.1 percent, employers are not creating enough new positions to keep up with population growth.

While delinquencies are rising, the pace of new home seizures has dropped, slowed by legal challenges to alleged shoddy document handling. Banks are also limiting their inventories of unsold homes to avoid flooding the market with more distressed sales than they have to.

Even as the foreclosure pipeline has slowed, roughly a third of all homes sold in the second quarter were foreclosed properties, according to listing firm RealtyTrac. The sale of those properties, often in need of repair, represent heavy losses for lenders. Bank-owned houses sold for roughly 40 less than the average price of other homes in the second quarter, according to RealtyTrac. That discount is up from 36 percent in the first quarter and 34 percent from the same quarter one year ago.

Bank of America also faces unknown losses from a legal challenges on several fronts. Earlier this month, American International Group sued the bank for $10 billion, claiming its Merrill Lynch and Countrywide units misrepresented the quality of mortgages used to back bonds sold to investors. Bank of America is also trying to settle similar complaints with 22 other investors, including the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

The bank is also one of several major financial institutions in settlement talks with state attorneys general over the questionable ?robo-signing? process used to speed foreclosures.

DEKKER ? Blog Archive ? From my new book: Greenspan Letter

Aug 24

This is a letter I sent to Mr. Alan Greenspan several months ago in response to comments he made about my generation. The letter will be included in my new book, a book of political and economic letters.

Mr. Greenspan?s original comments can be found here

Mr. Alan Greenspan,

Your recent comments regarding the generations of Americans born after 1964, known colloquially as generations ?X?, ?Y?, and ?Millennial?, are both morally reprehensible and ill-informed. For a man holding a position such as you do I am shocked that you would make such reckless assumptions without hard statistical data to back up your claims. For the purposes of this letter I will focus on the differences between the ?Baby Boomers 1946-1963? and ?Generation X 1964-1983?, as the younger generations are only recently becoming entry-level in the American workforce based upon a standard high-school graduation age of eighteen and a four year college education.

In your defense of the ?Baby Boomer? generation, you praise their work ethic and academic prowess over successive generations.

You have made the following public statements,

?In the United States, we are in the process of seeing the baby boomers ? the most productive, highly skilled, educated part of our labor force ? retire,? Greenspan tells The Globalist.

?They are being replaced by groups of young workers who have regrettably scored rather poorly in international educational match-ups over the last two decades.?

I will first educate you on the inaccuracies of your statements before indicting your beloved baby boomers with some rather damning facts.

Education:

27% of Baby Boomers received four or more years of college according to the US Department of Labor. However, according to a 2010 study by Sparxoo, an independent market research firm, Generation X has a 60% college graduation rate. According to Po Bronson in a 2006 Time Magazine article entitled ?Dear Graduates, Hilary Clinton Has Got You All Wrong?, as many as one third of all Generation X college graduates earned their degree while working a full time job.

Productivity:

You claim that the baby boomers were the ?most productive, highly skilled, educated part of our labour force?. The educational misnomer has been debunked, so I would like to share with you some statistics on employment. The same Time Magazine article I referenced earlier claims that 75% of college-age Generation X workers have some sort of job vs 68% from the previous generation. In addition to this a staggering 22% perform unpaid volunteer work of some type within their communities, the largest percentage in American history. A fact sheet provided by Boston College?s Sloan Work and Family Research Network claims: ?When we compare 2002 Gen-X employees with their age counterparts in 1977, we find that 2002 Gen-X employees actually work significantly more paid and unpaid hours per week (45.6 hours on average) than employees of comparable ages in 1977 (42.9 paid and unpaid hours per week on average)? (Families and Work Institute, 2004, p. 5).

Generation X and its successors stay productive despite baby boomer favoritism in the workplace. A Forbes.com article by Meghan Casserly from January of this year entitled, ?The New Pay Gap: Boomers, Gen-X, and Millennials? says: ?A 2009 study of 25,000 Millennials conducted by the Futures Company found that nearly 20% of the employees polled between the ages of 21 and 30 had seen at least one pay cut since 2008 and 14% suffered a layoff. In contrast, only 8% of Baby Boomers surveyed lost their jobs in the same year.?

Now that I have educated you on why your praise is misguided, I will enlighten you to the legacy of your favored generation.

Psychology:

The boomers had the highest divorce rate of any American generation and Dr. Judith Wallerstein of the Center for the Family in Transition is quoted by ABC News as saying of Generation X: ?They?re very good about work because they learn at a very early age you have to be independent, but they?re very troubled about their relationships, and they have a very hard time, and they blame their parents, and this affects the whole fabric of American society.?

Similarly, ABC News goes on to cite that Dr. Hetherington, a psychology professor at the University of Virginia, found up to 25 percent of children with divorced parents ?have serious social, emotional or psychological problems?

The US Divorce rate peaked in 1980 at over 27%.

Reckless Banking:

The baby boomers purchased and built homes they could not afford and fueled a housing bubble that burst onto them. The way that this effects subsequent generations is two fold. First, banks are less likely to extend credit to those seeking home ownership. This is not as crucial as it may seem considering research points to Generation X having a substantially decreased desire for this as a goal. The second is bank lending for small business, an area where Generation X is being gutted. As large corporations place more and more workers on contract, small business is becoming the single most important coal in the American economic fire and Generation X and millennials are trying very hard to stoke the flame. There is a distrust for large corporate entities among younger people and can you honestly blame them? In our lifetime we?ve seen no less than three economic bubbles burst. We?ve seen the largest misuses of retirement fund monies and equity ownerships in American history. We?ve seen our parents laid off. We?ve seen ourselves laid off. We?ve seen our peers work at Starbucks on the weekend to secure healthcare benefits while they toil away at their regular publicly traded jobs forty hours a week. When they?re not taking reductions in salaried pay they?re being paid as consultants on forty-five to sixty day invoices for jobs which used to be regular positions. Corporations sit back and watch American workers starve while they float money owed. They give nothing and take everything. If the banks do not support small businesses by young and fresh people, the country is truly doomed. If you can not see that, then perhaps you never deserved your former position of authority. This may be yet another puzzle you have not unraveled, and your famous quote regarding the housing bubble of 2007 ?I really didn?t get it until very late in 2005 and 2006? could be applied to this same issue. Given time the situation may become more clear to you.

To be fair, I do praise your enthusiasm for immigration reform. I have a great respect for immigrant workers and support any and all channels which help them to help natural born citizens form a more prosperous nation.

I understand that you may find fault with some of my sourcing, especially Time Magazine, as they named you number three on their list of twenty-five persons most to blame for the 2007 economic crisis. For that, I can offer no solution. I can only offer a quote from an about.com article by Christine Kennard entitled ?Is Dementia Age Related?. The quote is as follows: ?Dementia will affect roughly 10% of Americans over the age of 65 and roughly 50% by the age of 85.? If I?m not mistaken you turned 85 just this March. As part of the statistically most compassionate generation on record, I beg you to please seek regular counsel from qualified medical professionals.

I trust this correspondence has been enlightening.

The actress' dark strands were piled high into an undone updo. Wispy strands stuck out, giving the style a not-too-perfect, breezy effect.

Clad in a Vera Wang Lavender frock, Jimmy Choo pumps, and Van Cleef & Arpels jewels, Meester, 25, joined beauty and fashion editors in Soho to celebrate the launch of Vera Wang's newest fragrance, Lovestruck, which she is currently the face of.

US group: 8 mass graves now seen in Sudan region (AP)

NAIROBI, Kenya ? A U.S. monitoring group said Wednesday that satellite imagery had revealed the existence of two more mass graves in a contested region of Sudan, bringing the total number of mass graves sited there to eight.

The Satellite Sentinel Project, a group backed by actor and Sudan activist George Clooney, said that witnesses told the group that a backhoe was used to dig some of the graves at sites in Kadugli, South Kordofan. Workers with the Sudanese Red Crescent Society were present during some of the burials, the group said.

The U.S. group has not made any estimates of the number of bodies it believes have been buried in the graves, saying that onsite research would need to be carried out.

South Kordofan lies just across the border from newly independent South Sudan and has been the site of clashes between government troops from Sudan's Arab north and black tribesmen aligned with the south's Sudan People's Liberation Movement. Many inhabitants of South Kordofan fought for the south during the country's two decades-plus civil war against the north and are ethnically linked to the south.

A report released this month by the U.N. human rights office in Geneva said Sudanese security forces allegedly carried out indiscriminate aerial bombardments in South Kordofan that killed civilians in the weeks before South Sudan became independent on July 9. It also alleged that Sudanese forces executed prisoners accused of belonging to the south's Sudan Peoples' Liberation Movement before burying them in mass graves.

"The evidence against the Sudanese government continues to compound and has now become impossible to dismiss. It is time for the international community to take serious action and execute its responsibility to protect innocent lives in Sudan," said John Prendergast, co-founder of the activist group the Enough Project.

The Sudanese Red Crescent Society has said that it buried 59 bodies in marked burial sites in Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan state, between mid-June and mid-July.

The International Committee of the Red Cross says it supplied body bags, rubber boots and cameras to SRCS teams tasked with the management of dead bodies, according to spokeswoman Anna Schaaf. The ICRC is not on the ground in South Kordofan.

The satellite group in July reported the first three mass graves as excavated areas measuring about 26 meters (yards) by 5 meters (yards) visible near a school in the town of Kadugli. The group said that an eyewitness reported seeing 100 bodies or more put into one of the pits on June 8.

Sudan said last week that it will allow six U.N. agencies to take part in a government-organized mission to South Kordofan, where the U.N. human rights office has called for a probe into alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Khartoum's U.N. Ambassador Daffa-Alla Elhag Ali Osman said the joint mission will be sent to South Kordofan "to assess the situation of human rights there and the humanitarian needs."

Sudan President Omar al-Bashir on Tuesday announced a two-week cease-fire in South Kordofan.

Protein linked to Parkinson's disease may regulate fat metabolism

Thursday, August 25, 2011

National Institutes of Health researchers have found that Parkin, an important protein linked with some cases of early-onset Parkinson's disease, regulates how cells in our bodies take up and process dietary fats.

Parkinson's disease is a complex, progressive, and currently incurable neurological disorder characterized by shaking, stiffness, slowed movement, and impaired balance. Parkinson's primarily affects people over 50, but in about 5 to10 percent of cases it occurs in people as young as their 20s. This form of the disease, which affects actor, author, and Parkinson's activist Michael J. Fox, is known as early-onset Parkinson's.

Parkin mutations are present in as many as 37 percent of early-onset Parkinson's cases. However, laboratory mice with defective Parkin do not display obvious signs of the disease.

This preliminary study, which will appear online in the Journal of Clinical Investigation on Aug. 25, suggests defective Parkin may indirectly contribute to the development of some early-onset Parkinson's by changing the amount and types of fat in people's bodies.

"This discovery shows that the clues to understand Parkinson's disease may not necessarily be in the brain," said study leader Michael Sack, M.D., chief of the Laboratory of Mitochondrial Biology in Cardiometabolic Syndromes at the NIH's National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

The research team, composed of scientists from the NHLBI and the NIH's National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, observed that mice with defective Parkin did not gain weight in response to a high-fat laboratory diet, as regular mice typically do.

When the researchers examined several organs of the Parkin-defective mice, they noticed that the cells contained low levels of certain proteins that transport fat in the body. In contrast, normal mice that were fed the same high-fat diet had high levels of these fat-carrying proteins, as well as high levels of Parkin, suggesting that Parkin is involved in fat transportation.

The researchers saw a similar pattern when they analyzed blood cells from patients enrolled at the NIH Parkinson's Clinic. In lab tests, cells from people with Parkin mutations had less ability to absorb fat. These results provide evidence that the findings could be relevant in humans.

As to how fat may be important in Parkinson's, Dr. Sack notes that the brain cells destroyed during the course of the disease are found in a region called the substantia nigra, which controls movement, among other roles. "The neurons in this part of the brain are extremely active. Each one has over 300,000 connections and is continuously transmitting information," he said. "These neurons require good support in the form of their fat and cholesterol membrane. If the right types of fat aren't available, then cell integrity will be sub-par and they could be prone to damage."

Dr. Sack and his colleagues plan some early-stage clinical studies on the connection between fat metabolism and Parkinson's. They will continue working with the NIH Parkinson's Clinic and encourage patients to participate in the research as it moves forward.
