Forecasters see bumpy ride, but better 2012

By Martha C. White

Buckle your seatbelts. That's the message analysts have for investors in 2012.

Although the S&P 500 is on pace to wrap up this year more or less flat, the stock market gyrated wildly over the last 12 months. The good news is that experts say we're likely to finish 2012 with stocks in positive territory.?Getting there could be a bumpy ride.?

"Flat years are very unusual and the history of the year after the flat years is actually very positive," said said Wayne Kaufman, chief market analyst for John Thomas Financial.

"I see the markets higher by about 10 percent in 2012," said Gary Harloff, owner of Harloff Capital Management.?

Tim Speiss, chairman of the personal wealth advisor practice at EisnerAmper LLP, also predicted a positive 2012. "Let's say when we open for business on Tuesday, the Dow is at 12,200," he said. "I think you could see that climb up to something close to 13,000." ?

But this optimism for a modest increase is tempered by another shared sentiment: Getting there isn't necessarily going to be pretty.?

In the near term, there's European sovereign debt to worry about, Speiss said. "The European Union financials are going to be the most troublesome areas for investors." Intervention by the European Central Bank is a good sign, he said, but they're playing catch-up trying to contain the mess. "They're?in the midst right now of something they should have done a year ago," he said.

Speiss added that the market could turn negative at least temporarily if the Iranian regime follows through on its threat to disrupt oil shipments by closing the Strait of Hormuz. "[This] could be in the near term a significant issue" if investors lose confidence and if oil prices gyrate or spike higher, he said.?"Most oil analysts are looking at oil prices around $105 to $110," Kaufman said. "If it goes much higher than that, it's not a great thing."

"I've been focusing on February of this coming year as being an important time," Kaufman said, because for the last three quarters, investors have snapped up stocks during earnings seasons. The? next one happens in mid-January. But they tend to get buyer's remorse and dump the stocks shortly afterwards. Especially if companies lower their forecasts, Kaufman added, "Then you're going to see a pre-spring correction."

In the second half of the year, investors will have to steel themselves for what's virtually guaranteed to be an ugly battle for the White House and Congress. "I think that may take investors' eyes off of the stock market," Kaufman said.?

"The administration will probably enjoy a decrease in unemployment rates, which from a political perspective could play to their advantage," Speiss said. He predicted the number of jobless Americans could drop from 8.6 percent as of November?to as low as 8.3 percent by the summer?? still high, but an improvement.

Gary Harloff also said improvements in employment should be evident in the third quarter as more companies become confident enough to start hiring. "It's starting, but it's not noticeable yet," he said.

If President Obama is voted out of office in November, though, Speiss said bank stocks could benefit. "If the Republicans are elected it could very well be that you'll see a more bank friendly environment," he said. If a new administration relaxes restrictions and capital requirements, "(t)hat could be very positive outcome for the financial services sector."

Kaufman said the election of a new president perceived to be more business-friendly than President Obama could boost investor optimism. If that happens, "I?think you'll see an amazing fourth quarter rally," he said.

All of these factors will contribute the kind of volatility that marked this year's trading. One culprit is the proliferation of automated and high-frequency trading, Kaufman said. With machines rather than people responding to triggers in nanoseconds, even small movements can snowball rapidly.?

Political and economic events also play a role, though, and 2012 will have?more than its fair share. "I do think it's going to be a continuation of the type of volatility we've seen this year," Kaufman said. This year, there were 74 trading days during which 90 percent of stocks moved in the same direction, an all-time high. "It's like every few days we have one of these very lopsided days that used to be very rare occurrences," he said.

Top US envoy to visit Asia after Kim Jong Il death (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration is sending its top diplomat for Asia to China, South Korea and Japan next week to confer with officials there about developments in North Korea after the death of Kim Jong Il and U.S. rapprochement with Myanmar.

The State Department said Kurt Campbell, the assistant secretary of state for East Asia and the Pacific, would visit Beijing, Seoul and Tokyo from January 3 to 7.

Campbell will be the most senior U.S. official to visit the region since Kim's passing last week and succession by his youngest son, Kim Jong Un. He will also be the most senior U.S. official to visit North Asia since Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's historic visit to Myanmar in early December.

Tourist Finds Human Leg on Florida Beach

Police have few leads on who killed Ronni Chasen

(NEWSER) - The death of celebrity publicist Ronni Chasen is a real-life Hollywood murder mystery, and police are stumped. Nearly half of the Beverly Hills Police Department is working on the case, the Daily Beast reports, but they have little evidence, no motive, and no witnesses. Chasen was found fatally shot in her car?witnesses reported hearing five shots, the New York Times reports?which had crashed into a light post on a street full of million-dollar mansions. The passenger side window was shattered, but police aren't sure if that was the result of the accident, the gunshots, or some other force, the Los Angeles Times reports. Oddly, there was no other gunshot damage to the car, and no bullet casings were found. More?

Atomic refrigerator could make coldest things possible even colder

The level of control over matter that scientists are now developing to create ultra-cold objects could also be used to create entirely new states of matter and super-powerful quantum computers, researchers added. ?

The coolest things of the future might be created using what are essentially refrigerators that work on the atomic level, researchers say.

The level of control over matter that scientists are now developing to create ultra-cold objects could also be used to create entirely?new states of matter?and super-powerful quantum computers, researchers added.

Scientists routinely cool matter to a few billionths of a degree above absolute zero,?the coldest temperature?theoretically possible, which corresponds to?minus 459.67 degrees?Fahrenheit (minus-273.15 Celsius). Still, they would like to chill matter to even-colder temperatures to better understand other extreme phenomena, such as superconductivity, where electrons zip without resistance through objects.

Now physicists reveal a new way to create ultra-cold matter, with an idea similar to how fridges work. Refrigerators pump a fluid known as a refrigerant around the area they are cooling. This fluid sucks up heat. The refrigerant is then pumped someplace where it dumps this heat.

Chill atoms

First the researchers cooled?atoms of rubidium?with lasers. When set up properly, these beams can force atoms to glow in a way that makes them emit more energy than they absorb, thus making them colder.

When the atoms gave off light as a result of being hit with the laser, this exerted a slight pressure on them. The scientists took advantage of that pressure to control the atoms, either keeping them in place or moving them around, sometimes creating collisions. [Wacky Physics: The Coolest Little Particles]

The researchers then made the atoms even colder with evaporative cooling, in which matter gets cooled in much the same way as a cup of coffee loses its warmth ? the hottest atoms are allowed to evaporate, leaving behind the colder ones.

Finally, the researchers used webs of lasers known as "optical lattices." When two atoms are made to collide within the optical lattice, the excitations of one suppress the excitations of the other, a phenomenon called "orbital excitation blockade." The excited atoms are then removed from the system -- taking away entropy, the amount of energy available for work -- thus causing the remaining atoms to chill down.

In experiments with rubidium atoms in optical lattices, the physicists successfully demonstrated they could remove entropy from atoms via orbital excitation blockade. In principle, they can reach temperatures 10-to-100-times colder than currently achieved, to temperatures of tenths-to-hundredths-of-a-billionth of a degree above absolute zero. However, they likely need lasers of longer wavelengths to do so in real life, said researcher Markus Greiner, a physicist at Harvard University.

Exotic matter

Their research could help "create exotic new states of matter, ones never seen before," Greiner told LiveScience. "Who knows what the properties of these materials might be?"

The ability to create perfect arrays of atoms could also be "a great starting point for a general-purpose quantum computer," Greiner said. Quantum computers exploit the?bizarre nature of quantum physics?? such as how subatomic particles can effectively spin in two opposite directions at the same time ? to run calculations exponentially faster than normal computers for certain problems.

Research into?quantum computers?has mostly been on devices designed to each crunch one specific kind of problem, but optical lattices could lead to general-purpose quantum computers that, like modern personal computers, can tackle many different kinds of problems.

The scientists detailed their findings in the Dec. 22 issue of the journal Nature.

Mexico drug 'security chief' held

Mexican authorities have captured Felipe Cabrera Sarabia, the alleged security chief for the boss of the Sinaloa drug cartel.

Troops arrested Mr Cabrera in Culiacan, capital of Sinaloa state, defence officials said.

Army special forces also seized documents and computer equipment, AP reports.

More than 40,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence in Mexico since December 2006.

Since then, the government of President Felipe Calderon has been deploying the military to fight the gangs.

Mr Cabrera, known as "the Engineer", was brought before the news media wearing a bulletproof vest at a press conference in Mexico City on Monday.

His capture "will affect the structure and leadership of the Sinaloa cartel", said army spokesman Gen Ricardo Trevilla, according to AP.

Mr Cabrera is believed by defence officials to have run operations for the Sinaloa cartel in the northern state of Durango and in part of the northern state of Chihuahua, as well as being head of security for the cartel's boss, Joaquin Guzman.

Guzman is thought to be a billionaire and has been on the run from authorities since escaping from prison in 2001.

The US authorities have placed a $5m (?3.25m) bounty on Guzman's head, alleging that he and his cartel control most of the cocaine and marijuana trafficked into the US from Mexico and Colombia.

Meanwhile, Mexican troops have discovered 13 bodies in an abandoned truck in the north-eastern state of Tamaulipas.

The area has seen violence between the Gulf and Zetas cartels, and messages alluding to the rivalry were found in the truck, justice officials said.

The murders are believed to be linked to a similar discovery last Friday in neighbouring Veracruz state.

On Thursday, various attacks on buses and on people in the town of El Higo in Veracruz left 11 dead.

Putin resists rerun; Kremlin ideologist out (AP)

MOSCOW ? Facing a swelling wave of public anger over fraud-tainted elections, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Tuesday rejected demands for a rerun of the vote, while the Kremlin reassigned the architect of his tightly controlled political system to a job with no apparent domestic political duties.

The order by President Dmitry Medvedev to make Vladislav Surkov a deputy prime minister in charge of economic modernization was variously interpreted as a sign that leaders recognize the need for significant reform and as a cosmetic move with little meaning.

Allegations of fraud in the Dec. 4 national parliamentary election sparked a wave of protests unprecedented in post-Soviet Russia, including two vast rallies in Moscow that attracted tens of thousands. Putin, who was president in 2000-2008, seeks to return to the Kremlin in elections in March, and the protests have undermined his image as the inevitable winner.

Putin and Medvedev have sought to dilute the protests by rolling out a set of proposed political reforms, but have firmly resisted the protest leaders' main demand that the parliament elections be annulled and rerun. Opposition forces also say the proposed reforms are too little and too late.

In a meeting with supporters Tuesday, Putin again took a tough line on the election, saying "there can't be any talk about reviewing it" ? a position likely to lead to more protests.

The protesters have not only denounced the elections, but the entire so-called "managed democracy" political system implemented under Putin, under which parties that do not take their cues from the Kremlin or United Russia have been forced to the far sidelines.

Surkov, whose formal title had been deputy chief of the presidential administration, was seen as the developer of that system. He also is believed to be the creator of the intensely pro-Putin Nashi youth movement despised by the opposition.

Former Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin, a close Putin associate, was quoted by the state news agency RIA Novosti as saying The decision about the departure of Surkov, which I understand was made by Putin and Medvedev, is a very serious order for the renovation of the political system."

But in the view of Mikhail Prokhorov, the tycoon and New Jersey Nets owner who plans to run against Putin in March, "what happened today is no more than the moving of people from one office to another."

Putin on Tuesday urged his supporters to ensure fairness of the presidential vote to prevent any possible criticism, and discussed details of his proposal to put web cameras at all polling stations. He also suggested that all ballot boxes be made transparent.

"As a candidate, I don't need any vote-rigging," Putin said. "I want the election to be maximally transparent. I want to rely on people's will."

Alexei Navalny, an anti-corruption lawyer and popular blogger who has been a key driving force behind the latest protests, vowed that up to a million demonstrators would take to the streets before the presidential election.

Although Putin is seen as still the strongest candidate in the presidential elections, recent polls suggest his support his not enough to win an outright victory in the first round.

His United Russia party retained a slim majority in parliament in the December elections, but lost about 25 percent of its seats. The party's electoral performance, which protesters say would have been even weaker in an honest count, has galvanized opposition forces that were long marginalized under Putin.

'Unlucky' Cowan bats for DRS in India-Australia series

Australia's Ed Cowan walks off after his dismissal on the first day of the first Test against India at the MCG. (AFP Photo)

MELBOURNE: He batted as if he was born to play Test cricket.

Debutant Ed Cowan, who is in the form of his life, hardly put a foot wrong during his 294-minute knock of 68 at the MCG on Monday before being controversially given out caught behind off R Ashwin by umpire Ian Gould.

He hid his disappointment well at end of the day's play with a smart take on the issue.

Asked whether he had nicked the ball, Cowan smiled, saying, "It was a bit of a lazy shot ... you saw the replays, you saw my reaction, you can join the dots I guess."

Cowan took the opportunity to lend his voice to the growing demand for the Umpire Decision Review System ( DRS) in all series.

"As someone who loves his cricket and has watched a lot of cricket, I just don't understand why it (DRS) can't be handed down by the ICC to be uniform in all games. And that's me speaking as an outsider, not as someone who has been in the bubble for a long time. It is an interesting one, we'll see how it pans out, I'm sure it'll even itself out over the course of the series," Cowan said.

Cowan also empathized with his teammate Michael Hussey, whom umpire Marias Erasmus adjudged to be caught behind off Zaheer Khan.

"I feel for any batsman when he gets out. It's a bit of a gut-wrenching experience, doesn't matter whether it is first ball or when you're 150. Of course, I was disappointed for him," said Cowan.

He also pointed out that the two umpiring decisions completely changed the momentum of the game.

"It was a massive moment in the game. We'd just had a 100-run partnership and had wrestled back the momentum with another nearly 50-run partnership. We were probably half an hour away from really nailing them, grinding them into the dust. Today the momentum went against us because we lost two of our top-six, but that's the game and we'll take the good with the bad," Cowan added.

The Tasmanian admitted that he was surprised by his own lack of nerves on his debut.

"Strangely, I was not nervous, I can't explain why. I was a little anxious when we won the toss and batted, but no more than what we would've felt playing state cricket for Tasmania at the Bellerive Oval." I should've been a lot more nervous, I had to keep pinching myself to think 'mate you should be more nervous here, more anxious', but being relaxed really helped me through it and it felt like another bat-on-ball contest," he said.

Asked why he was took so much time to get going, Cowan said: "It didn't really feel like I was slow to get going. It felt like a new-ball wicket so in the first hour I was looking to leave the ball or play it late. It just felt like I was playing well. The runs came after lunch when they probably didn't bowl as well as they wanted to. But when they did bowl well it was hard to score."

Pakistani army denies intention to oust government (AP)

ISLAMABAD ? Pakistan's army chief denied accusations that the military is working to oust the country's civilian government amid tension over a secret memo sent to Washington earlier this year about an alleged coup, the military said Friday.

The memo scandal has heightened long-standing tensions between the army and the government at a time when the country is struggling to deal with a violent Taliban insurgency, a faltering economy and deteriorating relations with its most important ally, the United States.

Pakistani Taliban fighters attacked a paramilitary fort in northwestern Pakistan on Friday, killing one soldier and kidnapping 15 others, police said. The militants said in a statement issued after the attack that they would kill the abducted troops.

Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani claimed Thursday that there was a conspiracy under way to topple the government. He did not specifically point to the military, but said the army must be answerable to the parliament and cannot operate as a "state within a state."

Army chief Gen. Pervez Ashfaq Kayani denied the allegations and pledged the force would continue to support democracy in Pakistan.

"The army is fully cognizant of its constitutional obligations and responsibilities," Kayani said Thursday, during a trip near the Afghan border. His remarks were cited in an army statement Friday.

The army is the strongest institution in Pakistan and has ruled the country for much of its 64-year history after carrying out a series of coups. Analysts have expressed doubt that a coup is likely at this time, but have speculated the army may try to pressure the country's embattled president to resign over his alleged role in the memo scandal.

Pakistan's former ambassador to the U.S., Husain Haqqani, has been accused of being behind the memo, which asked Washington to help avert a supposed coup in the wake of the unilateral American raid that killed Osama bin Laden in a Pakistani garrison town in May. Haqqani allegedly acted with President Asif Ali Zardari's support.

Both Haqqani and the president have denied the allegations, but the envoy resigned in the wake of the scandal. Pressure on the government, especially Zardari, has increased this week as the Supreme Court opened a hearing into the memo.

Kayani said talk of a coup was "being used as a bogey to divert the focus from the real issues," a likely reference to the scandal. He said "issues of national security need to be considered on merit alone."

The political crisis could distract the army from its fight against the Pakistani Taliban, who aim to topple the government, partly because of the country's alliance with the U.S.

The nearly three dozen Pakistani Taliban fighters who attacked a paramilitary fort in Tank district with assault rifles before dawn Friday burned down buildings and captured a significant amount of weapons, said local police chief Ejaz Abid.

One soldier was killed and two were wounded in the fighting, Abid said. Another 15 are still missing and believed to have been kidnapped, he said.

Pakistani Taliban spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan claimed responsibility for the attack in a phone call to The Associated Press and said it was carried out to avenge the death of a local Taliban commander. He claimed 30 soldiers were kidnapped.

But another Taliban commander who said he carried out the attack, Asmatullah Shaheen, told the AP that he had 15 soldiers in his custody. Some others managed to escape after the militants captured them, he said.

Abid, the police chief, said at least 22 soldiers were missing originally, but seven managed to return.

Shaheen said the militant commander being avenged, Taj Gul, was killed in a U.S. drone strike in October in South Waziristan, an important sanctuary for the Pakistani Taliban next to Tank.

The militants attacked the Pakistani soldiers in response because of the country's alliance with the U.S., he said.

Ehsan, the Taliban spokesman, said the militants have no intention of bargaining for the kidnapped soldiers' release and intend to kill them.

"We are going to cut these soldiers into pieces one by one, and we will send these pieces to their commanders," said Ehsan.

Flyers coach Laviolette shoves Stars' Ott in tunnel scuffle

Philadelphia Flyers coach Peter Laviolette exchanged words with Dallas Stars tough guy Steve Ott, and then gave Ott a shove, after the first period of Wednesday's game in Dallas.

Ott appeared to block the coach?s path back toward the dressing room as the teams were leaving the ice. Laviolette responded by trying to move the Stars forward out of his way.

After the game, Ott said the confrontation was all about allowing the Stars to exit first as a courtesy in their own building.

"It's disrespect of our building, just let our team off, it's not a big deal," Ott said. "He obviously thought that he has a higher power than everybody else and a little bit more arrogance. Of all the coaches in the whole NHL, that's probably the first time I've seen that.

"I would never do that if I was in Philadelphia in their building and had to walk through their lineup. Just let us go and show a little respect, that's all."

Laviolette refused to comment on the incident after the game, instead wanting to focus on how the Flyers' win put the team back atop the Eastern Conference standings.

"Unfortunately, the Blackhawks won," Laviolette said, meaning that the Flyers would not be atop the NHL standings, just the East. "We should probably keep it about the game because it was such a big win for our team

Ott continued to get chirpy in the second period with the Flyers? bench. Marc-Andre Bourdon dropped his gloves to try to fight Ott, but Ott never engaged him.

"I was trying to stand up for my partners," said Bourdon. "If he's chirping at others, just fight me but then Morrow got in there. He [Ott] turned around first... He's just a [bleep]."

At the end of the second period, the Flyers were instructed by officials to leave the ice through the Zamboni door at the far end of the rink.

The Flyers won the game, 4-1.

The NHL's Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell will get to make the call of whether or not Laviolette was in the wrong, according to Darren Dreger of TSN.ca.

'Anderson': Jane Fonda Brings A Fitness Flash Mob To The Set (VIDEO)

Jane Fonda started a fitness revolution throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. Now, at 73 years old, she's back to it, this time focusing on fitness among seniors. On "Anderson" (Weekdays, syndicated), Fonda started showing one of the exercises she focuses on in her new workout videos, emphasizing the importance of balance for older people.

But a few minutes into it, she decided it was too hard, and she really wasn't dressed appropriately for exercise anyway. "I have some friends here that might show you what to do. Okay?"

With those words, a flash mob erupted on the set, with people running in from all around, and even large portions of the audience getting up and getting involved in the choreographed exercise routine. It was certainly a hip and modern way to bring a sense of fun to fitness, proving that Jane Fonda is just as current today as she was decades ago.

She's keeping busy with more than just exercise as well. Fonda has signed on for a recurring role on Aaron Sorkin's untitled HBO drama series set at a cable news network. Reports have Fonda playing the CEO of the network.

Catch "Anderson" syndicated weekdays. Check local listings for times and channels.

Obama wants payroll tax extended for entire year (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama, rebuffed by Congress on a yearlong extension of a Social Security payroll tax cut, said Saturday that it would be "inexcusable'" for lawmakers not to lengthen the short-term deal when they return from their holiday break.

The bill, passed by the Senate shortly before the president spoke briefly at the White House, would extend the tax cut and long-term jobless benefits for just two months ? a partial victory for Obama that also sets the stage for another tax fight in February.

While pleased by the Senate vote, Obama said "it would be inexcusable for Congress not to further extend this middle-class tax cut for the rest of the year. It should be a formality, and hopefully it's done with as little drama as possible when they get back in January."

He added, "This really isn't hard. There are plenty of ways to pay for these proposals."

Obama has rallied support for the extension of the payroll tax cut in recent weeks, arguing that failure by Congress to extend the cuts would raise taxes on middle-class families and undermine the economic recovery.

The plan is a modest step forward for Obama's year-end jobs agenda. It renews the cut in the Social Security payroll tax for 160 million workers and provides additional unemployment benefits averaging about $300 a week for millions of people who have been out of work for six months or more.

Democrats and Obama sought to pay for the additional payroll tax cuts by placing a surcharge on individuals and couples with $1 million or more in income but Republicans opposed the tax increases. The additional costs would be covered by raising fees on new mortgages backed by Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac or the Federal Housing Administration.

Obama said his preference, "and the preference of most Americans, is that we ask the wealthiest few Americans to pay their fair share and corporations to do without special taxpayer subsidies to cover some of the costs. But I think that it's important for us to get it done."

As a condition for GOP support of the payroll tax measure, Obama had to agree to accelerate a decision on a proposed a Canada-to-Texas oil pipeline that promises thousands of jobs.

Obama made no reference to the pipeline in his remarks.

Senior administration officials said the Republican attempts to speed up the decision on the pipeline would ultimately undermine their work to get the project built quickly because the State Department has said an expedited process would not give them enough time to conduct a proper review.

The most likely outcome, they said, is that the project would not go forward next spring. The officials only spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the deliberations.

The House is expected to consider the payroll tax cut measure early next week. Obama said he was hopeful "we're going to be able to make sure that when everybody gets back next year we extend this further, all the way to the end of the year."

While the world was waiting for the announcement on which team had won the bidding for 25-year-old Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters' right-hander Yu Darvish, the Washington Nationals announced that they'd signed 24-year-old now-former San Francisco Giants' pitcher Waldis Joaquin. The Giants signed the 6'0'', 240lb right-hander as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2003. Joaquin debuted in the Majors in 2009, appearing in 10 games, but he's made just nine appearances with the Giants since then, moving up and down in San Francisco's system. In a matter of days in 2010 Joaquin was claimed by the Chicago White Sox, granted free agency and signed again by the Giants. The right-hander spent the bulk of his time in the Triple-A Fresno Giants' bullpen where he had a 3.44 ERA, 5.05 FIP, 4.89 K/9 and 4.17 BB/9 in 35 games and 49.2 IP. Joaquin has a (1-0) record at the major league level with a 5.40 ERA, 4.87 FIP, 17 walks (7.06 BB/9) and 17 K's (7.06 K/9) in 19 games and 21.2 IP.

According to MLB.com's Bill Ladson (@washingnats), who confirmed the original reports of Waldis Joaquin signing, the Nationals also signed minor league infielder Jarrett Hoffpauir, a 28-year-old utility infielder who's played 21 games in two major league stints (8 G with St. Louis, 13 w/ TOR) in which he has a .217/.308/.283 slash. The Cardinals' '04 6th Round pick has a .285/.366/.428 line over 8 seasons in the Minors, six of which were spent in St. Louis' system. After a year in the Blue Jays' organization, Hoffpauir played in 91 games at Triple-A in the San Diego Padres' system in 2011, posting a .281/.356/.428 line in 356 plate appearances over which he hit 26 doubles and five home runs.

Insert Coin: Kapsule Lightstand puts your Kindle Keyboard in the spotlight

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.

There are plenty of benefits to e-ink displays, they're clean, easy on the eyes, light on the battery draining and can be read in direct sunlight, unlike their LCD brethren. There are a number of downsides as well, of course, including the lack of backlighting, making them tough to read in a dark room. Several companies have attempted to capitalize on this shortcoming, with clip-on accessories that are sometimes awkward and unwieldy when attached to tiny e-readers. Though, for the record, some have managed to get things right, like Amazon's own Lighted Leather Cover for the fourth-gen Kindle.
